Michigan Deep Dive: Cost of Living

The rising cost of living is a primary concern for Michigan policymakers, with over 35 percent citing it as a top challenge. This comes at a time when nearly 40 percent of Michiganders say they struggle to afford basic needs, according to a recent biannual report that measures cost of living in the state. Policy leaders on both sides in Michigan believe reducing living costs is important, with 38 percent of Republicans and 32 percent of Democrats saying it is a priority. Democrats in the state highlight the impact of income inequality as a factor that exacerbates the soaring cost of living.
